A brief sketch of my life written for my granddaughter for her genealogical class work.

Mrs. Nellie Rhodes Nickle.

I was born at Toledo, Ohio, July 1st 1875. My parents names were Bartlett Rhodes and Susanna Oakley. My father was born 1844 Nov. 22 at Cincinnati, Ohio. My mother was born 1856 March 19 at St. Johns, Ohio, Anglaize Co. As a child I was rather frail, so my father decided to move to the Mts. Of Tennessee, he remembered them as being very beautiful, with many springs, having been there as a Civil War Veteran. About the time he was ready to leave Ohio an uncle visited us who lived in the Ozarks of N. W. Arkansas, and persuaded my father to move there instead of Tennessee, as the climate & water was practically the same. We lived in Eureka Springs, Ark., when I met my husband, F. C. Nickle. After we were acquainted almost a year, we were married Oct. 9, 1895. We did not have the convenient modes of transportation in those days that we have now, so our social activities were necessarily within a radius of about 4 miles. We would walk to our “socials,” “spelling bee’s,” a distance of 2 l/2 miles or even more and think nothing of it! There were no automobiles, and not every person had a horse and buggy; sometimes a group would go together in a wagon or buggy (or if in winter) in a sleigh, but I doubt if the youngsters of today are any happier than those of the earlier days, which about proves, “the more we have the more we want.” There were no moving pictures then, and we Attended what we termed “literary societies,” which were some like our M.I.A. gatherings. Sometimes “spelling bees” would be held and in the farm localities corn “husking bees” furnished a lot of amusement. Since my marriage we have traveled extensively; part of the time we lived in California, part of the time in Utah, Ark and Mo. Our family consisting of five sons and five daughters went to Utah in Dec. 1918, and on following July 10, 1919, we were married in Manti Temple and our ten children were sealed to us, the three oldest taking their endowments the same day. Our aim and ambition is to live the gospel and teach it to others to the best of our ability.
